  • “Saturday is the Jewish community’s day off: Yiddish is spoken on the avenue.”

Between 1920 and 1950, the avenue runs through Montreal's Jewish district, from Park to Saint-Denis. By the early 20th century, this growing community has established its own institutions: schools, a maternity hospital, homes for the elderly and places of worship. Nosach Ha'ari synagogue opens its doors right here in three renovated duplexes. Imagine a vast prayer space surmounted by a U-shaped balcony.

After the Second World War, a large portion of the Jewish population moves to the west of the city. In 1963, the Théâtre de Quat'Sous troupe buys the disused synagogue and converts it into a 160-seat theatre. The famous small venue is then rebuilt in 2008.
